No one has ever quite been able to figure out what happened with
this one. The original cover was pencilled by Marie Severin and inked by
Frank Giacoia. Apparently, someone up at Marvel didn't like the way the
Asgardian soldiers were rendered at the bottom of the page so they had the
bottom half of the cover redone by Jack Kirby and Bill Everett. So the top
half, including the Hulk figure, is Severin/Giacoia and the remainder is
Kirby/Everett...but it's odd that they called on Jack, who was a freelancer, not
on staff. (Kirby, by the way, was never paid anything for some or all the
cover retouchings you see examples of in this section.) It's also odd that they didn't just have him redo
the whole cover, which probably would have been less work than doing a drawing
that would match up with what Marie has already drawn.
The odds are that Kirby was visiting the office at the time they decided the redraw was
necessary. He probably did whatever he did right there in the office, then
ran out and took a train home before they asked him to do any more of this kind
of work.
