In 1971, DC decided to do a storyline in Green Lantern-Green
Arrow concerning drug use at about the same time Marvel decided to tackle
the topic in Amazing Spider-Man. Marvel's got to the stands first,
in part because Marvel decided to ignore an objection by the Comics Code and
publish several issues of Spider-Man without that board's seal of
approval. You'll note that the published cover above does not sport the
Code stamp...nor does it have any mention of the drug storyline. This
cover, drawn by John Romita, was a last-minute substitute, apparently to
downplay that topic. If you mouse over, you'll see the first cover, which
was drawn by Gil Kane. (The original version looks a bit sloppy since
that's a scan of the color guide that was prepared for the issue.)
